Storyline:
The film follows the rise to power of Daniel Plainview - a charismatic and ruthless oil prospector, driven to succeed by his intense hatred of others and desperate need to see any and all competitors fail. When he learns of oil-rich land in California that can be bought cheaply, he moves his operation there and begins manipulating and exploiting the local landowners into selling him their property. Using his young adopted son H.W. to project the image of a caring family man, Plainview gains the cooperation of almost all the locals with lofty promises to build schools and cultivate the land to make their community flourish. Over time, Plainview's gradual accumulation of wealth and power causes his true self to surface, and he begins to slowly alienate himself from everyone in his life.

This movie was a brilliant piece that focused itself on the dynamic character acted out by Daniel Day-Lewis. I cannot divulge too much information, for one, because you must see this for yourself, but even more so...I need to see it again. Much like the recently released No Country For Old Men, there is much to absorb and analyze (more so in Blood). At 2+ hours, it covers a deal of cinematic ground and as well as a slew events in the life of the film's main character and some of the supporting roles. I must warn you that this film will not satisfy the average moviegoer. You must enter with an open mind and leave this film in though and hopefully some spirited conversation.

Want to see a film that might soon be considered one of the best ever made? Then see THERE WILL BE BLOOD, Paul Thomas Anderson's masterpiece. For the less pop-culturally aware, this film comes from the director of BOOGIE NIGHTS & MAGNOLIA. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Those movies were weird!". Yes, they were. As great as they were, I can safely say there's nothing weird about TWBB. It is simply brilliant. Loosely based on Upton Sinclair's 1927 novel "Oil", TWBB tells the story of Daniel Planview (DDL) a driven oil-man in every sense of the word. Plainview talks the talk like the best of them, but the film focuses on the manner by which he walks the walk. The 'walk' in this story is the challenge he faces embarking on his latest oil prospect. Supporting performances by Paul Dano as faithful Eli Sunday, & Dillon Freaser as Planiview's son are fantastic. The film's tech aspects are flawless, notably the score by Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood. For parents, I think the title says it

I went to this movie after my wife convinced me. Never liked Daniel Day Lewis. Didn't care for Last of the Mohicans or any other of his movies. But we were mesmerized! This movie was compelling from start to finish. Great period piece. Lewis' performance was impeccable as an eccentric oil tycoon. You found yourself wondering his next move at every turn. A bit long; however each scene was necessary. Couldn't stop thinking about it. I am writing this review a MONTH later!

While many movies hope to placate the emotional pinings of a biploar American audience, "...Blood" is a hope-sucking vampire. The audience gets what it deserves if it walks away feeling "sad, depressed, dissatisfied." I walked into this pic, only with the preconceived notion that Daniel Day Lewis would dazzle once again. And he does! This isn't the story of an oil tycoon, but a man hopelessly immersed in his own humanness. The character works himself like a dog, searching for "black gold". His interaction with other people revolves around his own limitations. To paraphrase Lewis from one of the trailers: "I look at other people, and find nothing worth liking." Were we honest, we would see that each of us has probably felt this way before. Given the era, it's an understandable sentiment. Plainview does nothing different than the average American pill popper. A pill to feel good, another to pop a boner, and yet another to fall asleep. We, NOT Plainview, are grotesque, pathetic, and sad.

Clearly an adaptation of Upton Sinclair?s work, Oil, with threads of Giant, Elmer Gantry, and Gangs of New York emoting from a deep character study of a man spinning into moral decay and corruption as he gains in wealth and ill-gotten power. Daniel Day-Lewis is clearly the man for the role and he appears completely absorbed in the character of Daniel Plainview, believably evolving into a wretched and disturbed shell of a person as he systematically sheds himself of anything that would keep his self-absorption from seizing control. With the fine exception of Paul Dano sparring nicely as Eli Sunday, a rather dismal, power-hungry character himself (whom we later climatically seeoops, a spoiler averted), the rest are appendages to Daniel Day-Lewis? romp in mania. He starts and remains intense and consistently a man willing to sacrifice anything and anyone, including any vestiges of humanity within himself, to accomplish his goal of ?success.?
